Physician, heal thyself?

5 Apr

Grammar PoliceI noticed this little gem in our local newspaper:

Those copy editors!: Last week a reader of the popular journalism blog, JimRomenesko.com, tipped off its author that a large exhibition inside Chicago’s Willis Tower has a nice tribute to legendary Chicago author, Studs Terkel, but that the exhibit has his name misspelled as “Turkel.”

Once it made Romenesko.com, the Chicago Tribune then also did a story on the misspelling, which has been on display for 14 years.

Never mentioned, though, is the irony that it was a downstate Illinoisan who noticed the misspelling of the Chicago icon or that the “Turkel” detector also earns a living noticing — and correcting — things like that.

The downstate detector?

Jane Pickering. When not shopping with a daughter in Chicago, as last week when they spotted “Turkel,” she is a copy editor at this newspaper.

Now, normally that would invoke a response such as “I see that kind of thing all the time” or something similar. However; in this situation, my only feeling was “I wish Ms. Pickering was as vigilant when it comes to errors in the publication she works for.”

I do have examples! I’ll post them as I find the pics.

Sidenote: Dear Ciel. I found your tangled up Pink Floyd headphones in the dryer. Which inevitably means they went through the wash cycle prior to being tumble-dried.  You’re welcome.
